WPSL 5/27/08

SACRAMENTO, CA (05/27/08) - Action in the East Conference of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) has been in full swing the past few weeks, and it took a long holiday weekend for the rest of the teams to catch up. They most certainly did as the WPSL slate saw plenty of success from new and old teams alike, with a few perennial favorites going down in action out in the West. A solid showing from Puerto Rico midfielder Patricia Chapa was over-shadowed by the youth movement in the East & West Conferences, as Long Island's forward Alaina Beyar and Los Angeles' goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez are the WPSL Co-Players of the Week. WPSL Win 1st game of their season
May 25 2008 - Emanuel Martins
Los Angeles Rampage started its inaugural WPSL season off on the front foot with a 2 to 1 victory over the highly rated Ajax team Saturday, May 24th. After a scoreless first half, the goals came fast and furious late in the second half with Marihelen Tomer of Rampage opening the scoring at 80:30 with a curving right footed shot to the side netting from the touchline to the left of the Ajax goal. Tomer used her speed and strength to bring the ball down the sideline and then cut inside to get her perfectly placed shot off.
Ajax tied the score a mere 30 seconds later on a goal by Renee Scachetti after some sustained final third pressure. The game winner for Rampage followed shortly thereafter in the 83rd minute off a header by Salma Tarik from the right side of the box. Louise Lieberman assisted on the goal with a fine cross from the left sideline. The hard work of Tomer was again evidenced as she beat a double team to get the ball to Lieberman with space and time to make her pinpoint cross to Tarik.
Nakisha Gutierrez was also a key to the impressive win based on the critical diving saves she made in the Rampage goal throughout the match. “It’s definitely inspiring to kick-off our inaugural season with such a positive result” Said Emanuel Martins, head coach of the LA Rampage, also adding “At this level it is important to have depth, and today we had two players coming off the bench to combine for the late game winner, which is uplifting”.
